we are still alive!

Wow we've been here for 9 days already! It actually doesn't feel like that long, we've had some ups and downs, I've been a little bit home sick but we are still enjoying it.
Yesterday I had a bit of a scare, was up and down all night with a fever, massive stomach cramps and diarrhea (pleasant) I was a little worried that I had contracted malaria, because apparently despite the doxy tablets, the insect spray and mozzie nets it can still happen! but thankfully I woke up today feeling fine - I don't think I'll eat fish again.

So we have been out at the orphanage most days, playing with the kids and teaching them games and helping them with washing pumping water from the well. today we plan to order some mosquito nets for them, which will help. one of the children was taken to the hospital with malaria the other day.

We went out to the best night club in Masaka the other night haha - Ambience Discoteque. it was off the hook! as we walked in we were told to have no cameras and we were patted down for any weapons etc. also had to walk through metal detectors. inside it was pretty big and there were coloured lights and chrome hand rails and poles every where. the carpet was like something from a bowling ally.
We were partying with some Ugandan guys from Kampala that the others had met on NYE and it was pretty fun - but as we do, Westy and I headed home before 2am and left the others to it.

we are living on carbs here, the food is so bland and I'm sick of it haha, all potatoes, breads, beans and rice. one place we go (Bananah Chick) has some nice samosas so we often have them for breakfast and dinner. there are some good pop corn vendors too.

running out of time now, Robert went shopping in Kampala and bought a lot of stuff for the kids including tooth brushes, books, shampoo (though none of them have hair now!) and food as well as school books etc. which is great :D

any way bye for now!

  1. You guys are my heroes :)
Its awesome that you got to see chameleons, we just bought these two great table books about rare and amazing animals and there are heaps of chameleons!
The deal with Doxy is that it doesnt stop you from getting malaria, it just means that you will already have the antibiotic in your system so that if you do get it you are already "fighting it" and have a better chance of getting over it.
I have some stuff here that you soak your nets or clothes in it and it keeps the mozzies away for months. I should post it over? never gunna get used here!
Do they drink a lot of milk over there? Potatoes are awesome but not for every meal haha.
Thank god you were only sick for 24hrs... scary!!
    sending you lots of love

  3. hey Jess, I wouldn't bother sending it over, just wait till you go on a trip like this :D haha we used it for our bedding and some clothes before we left.
yeah I knew that about the doxy, but apparently if the symptoms like that are showing it means that the doxy hasn't worked (I'm living with med students here, haha)

They drink some milk, but i think its expensive and its not pasteurized, but we have had it a bit with porridge at the orphanage, its boiled with maize corn and sugar.

mum! I want mexican! we found a western restaurant with lasagna the other day, it was great!
